Are you feeling trapped in your current job? Before launching a job search, it’s important to pause for some self-reflection.
Are there any patterns you might be carrying that could follow you to your next position? It would be heartbreaking to go through the stress of changing jobs, only to end up just as miserable in your new situation.
Here’s a common scenario I’ve seen with several clients, that needs attention before making a change:
- They consistently overwork to please their bosses
- They struggle to set healthy boundaries
- This leads to burnout and health issues
Often, these behaviors arise from deeper parts of ourselves. For example, people-pleasing can come from a part that feels “not good enough.”
Here’s a few things you can do to start healing these sensitive parts:
- Start a written chat with each part, approaching it with the gentleness you’d show a child.
- Ask what it wants for you to understand its intentions.
- Explore what core need it’s trying to fulfill.
- Find ways to meet that need yourself. For example, if that part of you is seeking validation through people-pleasing, remind yourself of your successes and practice self-love.
- “Reparent” this part regularly, catching when it looks for external validation.
By addressing these internal dynamics in this way, you can enjoy better self-care and greater clarity to pursue your most purposeful career. It also is likely to lead to more authentic work relationships.
Is there a part of you that might need your attention right now?
