I was taught that when a big challenge arises, attack it with problem-solving skills. And for years I prided myself on being a great problem solver, with skills honed through my first career in software development.
However, one of my biggest life lessons was that within every difficult challenge lies a beautiful gift. It may take longer than you’d like to uncover, but I’ve found it’s always there. And the gift offers much more than skill building–it offers transformation.
When Momentum Stops
In my personal journey, I’ve had my own share of challenges that stopped the momentum I was building toward a big goal. Here’s one that changed everything.
Years ago, I was enjoying a successful career as a software development manager and lead engineer. But then multiple joint injuries—carpal tunnel, a pinched neck nerve, and more—created a crisis. I had been pushing myself to meet unrealistic deadlines, and I was afraid to quit in the middle of a multi-million-dollar client project, thinking I’d destroy my reputation in the industry.
Yet when I was told the next step if I continued at that job was neck fusion surgery, I knew I had to quit no matter what. Even the offer of a raise didn’t move me, because I only have one neck!
The Unexpected Gifts
Two beautiful gifts came out of my decision. First, I started mentoring a young man with great promise to take over my position, and it was the perfect opportunity for him. The second gift came through a series of synchronicities that allowed me to end my software career and start my coaching business.
A friend of mine with a training company who had lost his business manager invited me to take that position. Even better, he wanted an internal coach and sent me to coaching school!
Long story short, I fell in love with coaching. I hired someone to gradually take over my responsibilities at the training company while I built my coaching business. This was such a wonderful gift that I continue to feel grateful for.
Ultimately, what seemed like a career-ending crisis became a career-defining moment.
