What stops you from living the truth of your calling? When you feel the tug of a calling, it’s common to have a part of you tell you that you are not “good enough” to pursue your purpose or that it’s not safe to live it. This creates an inner push-pull between reluctant parts of you and the visionary part of you.
How do you resolve this dilemma? This pattern will subconsciously sabotage your efforts as long as you remain unaware of the reluctant parts. Once you recognize what’s going on under the hood, you can take steps to minimize its impact on you.
At the same time, it’s important to actually appreciate these aspects of yourself that are just trying to take care of you and protect you from taking risks. Forgive them and appreciate their efforts no matter how clumsy and misguided they are. They do have your best interests at heart!
In order to clear the path to living your purpose, there are three steps to take.
First, make a list of the reluctant parts of your psyche along with their favorite sayings. For example, you might notice that you have an inner “Arrogance Monitor” saying “What kind of egomaniac are you, to imagine stepping up to being this powerful?”
Another popular reluctant part is a “Safety Monitor” telling you “It’s too risky to put yourself out in the world in such a way.”
Then, for each of these misaligned parts you discover in your psyche, find and list a counterbalancing part alongside the original part. For example, a counterbalance for an “Arrogance Monitor” could be a compassionate and loving part of you such as a “Heart Connector” which supports you in staying in touch with your heart and humility.
If you have a “Safety Monitor” holding you back, look for and list a part that is strong and bold. For example, this could be “Inner Strength” or a “Clear Boundary Manager.”
Finally, put your list to good use by recognizing your misaligned parts as soon as they take charge. Acknowledge their point of view with appreciation for their protective instincts, and then remember that they are not the only point of view available. Take the opportunity to invoke the counterbalancing voice to reactivate your full resourcefulness and variety of options.
